I've been working on this piece as a sample for my agent (more on that to follow soon...). Created using a Wacom tablet in Photoshop with scanned in hand rendered textures.

 

Children's Samples

A couple of samples I've been working on for an agency. Both were created in response to prompts; the first a family scene evoking togetherness, the second a classroom scene.

 

Secret Agent

I'm working on another couple of spreads for Katha to feature in one of their school textbooks. This time the illustrations are all linked to code and secret messages. 

I've been working with a limited colour palette which makes a change from my usual way of working! Here's a glimpse of one of my characters so far...

Sri Lanka

Another map commission finished- this time Sri Lanka! Plentiful opportunities to play around with foliage and animals, and really enjoyed layering up all the scanned textures in Photoshop. It'll be off to it's new owner shortly!

Sri Lanka

Another glimpse of a new commission in progress- this time a digitally illustrated map of Sri Lanka.

India Gate WIP

A work in progress inspired by my recent trip to New Delhi and an opportunity for me to experiment with a slightly new way of working. Moving on from the earlier India street scene piece I created, I’ve started to incorporate more hand painted elements into my work which I then manipulate and put together in Photoshop. I want to achieve more of a handcrafted feel to my digital work; to add more texture and depth.


Katha Utsav 2015

In December I was invited by the team at Katha to lead a series of illustration workshops at their annual Utsav in New Delhi! 

Spread over 3 days, my group of 20 students from the Katha Lab school explored mixed media, character design and storytelling. The final day culminated in me leading a workshop for all 300 participants in the outdoor amphitheatre with the winning 5 illustrators each winning a Katha book.



This was an incredible experience and I’m so grateful to all at Katha for allowing to get involved. India’s rich culture along with the noise, chaos and colour of the city have definitely left me inspired to create some new work exploring this country. Watch this space!


 

2015

Blimey! It's been a while since I uploaded onto here! Here's a glimpse at some other work I had the pleasure of working on last year...
 
This piece was a 3 page illustration spread created for Indian publisher/charity Katha. The illustration was to accompany the poem 'Two scavengers in a truck, two beautiful people in a Mercedes' by Beat poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti, and feature in a school text book.

This is a self initiated piece inspired by an Indian street scene. This illustration was a chance for me to experiment with a slightly different way of working by including more hand made textures into my work to add depth.
 

AOI Prize for Illustration 2015

I had a fabulous evening at the end of May soaking in the beautiful work shortlisted for this years' Association Of Illustrators Prize for Illustration exhibition at the London Transport Museum. The theme was 'London Places and Spaces' and there was a HUGE variety of work on show (including my own piece 'Chumleigh Gardens)! 

Some personal favourites included work by illustrators: Chris Belson, Faye Moorhouse, Esther Cox and the winning piece by Eleanor Taylor.

The exhibition runs until September at the London Transport Museum so make sure you get down there for a visit. All the shortlisted entries are also available to purchase as digital prints via the London Transport Museum shop.

Hong Kong... take 3!

Guess what I've been up to... making more maps of Hong Kong! This one's also for a private commission and the first time I've created a map featuring the entire outline of the island.

AOI London Places and Spaces

This is my entry for the Association of Illustrators annual competition. This years theme 'London Places and Spaces' required me to capture either an iconic or lesser known part of London in an illustration celebrating a vibrant and multi layered, multicultural city. I wanted to depict a part of London that is open to everyone; a public space that can be enjoyed without having to pay a fee. As a result, I chose Chumleigh Gardens (situated in Burgess Park, South London) as my space. The garden itself is a celebration of multiculturalism, with a series of interlinking smaller 'world' gardens each featuring plants from a different part of the globe. The central Islamic garden features as the centre piece to my illustration. The gardens are also an important part of the local community, with raised beds for the use of school groups and community gardeners to grow their own produce. 

I created this entire piece digitally with a graphics tablet- a process which is still relatively new to me, and a departure from my usual screen printing. Through this change in media, I was able to add layers of detail I would usually have to avoid out of practicality. This is definitely a method of working with which I will continue to experiment.

Norfolk Broads... in COLOUR!

Aaand here's the finished coloured in map of the Norfolk Broads! I had a really great time producing this piece- the whole thing was coloured and finished digitally with a pen and tablet- a completely new way of working for me. I'll definitely be experimenting with this more in the future so watch this space!

AOI Competition

Another work in progress, this time a piece for the AOI's Prize for Illustration competition. I'll post up more details on the concept behind the illustration after deadline day, but here's a preview! 

Norfolk Broads

The beginnings of a digital commission of the Norfolk Broads. I've got this pretty much mapped out now although I will make a few small alterations to layout and positioning of some of the smaller bits and pieces. Coloured version to follow in the next couple of weeks!
