AOI London Places and Spaces
This is my entry for the Association of Illustrators annual competition. This years theme 'London Places and Spaces' required me to capture either an iconic or lesser known part of London in an illustration celebrating a vibrant and multi layered, multicultural city. I wanted to depict a part of London that is open to everyone; a public space that can be enjoyed without having to pay a fee. As a result, I chose Chumleigh Gardens (situated in Burgess Park, South London) as my space. The garden itself is a celebration of multiculturalism, with a series of interlinking smaller 'world' gardens each featuring plants from a different part of the globe. The central Islamic garden features as the centre piece to my illustration. The gardens are also an important part of the local community, with raised beds for the use of school groups and community gardeners to grow their own produce.
I created this entire piece digitally with a graphics tablet- a process which is still relatively new to me, and a departure from my usual screen printing. Through this change in media, I was able to add layers of detail I would usually have to avoid out of practicality. This is definitely a method of working with which I will continue to experiment.

Norfolk Broads... in COLOUR!
Aaand here's the finished coloured in map of the Norfolk Broads! I had a really great time producing this piece- the whole thing was coloured and finished digitally with a pen and tablet- a completely new way of working for me. I'll definitely be experimenting with this more in the future so watch this space!

Norfolk Broads
The beginnings of a digital commission of the Norfolk Broads. I've got this pretty much mapped out now although I will make a few small alterations to layout and positioning of some of the smaller bits and pieces. Coloured version to follow in the next couple of weeks!

A to Z of Cities
This is a current little something I'm working on; I plan to create a series of prints based around the first letter of a city. Each letter will feature little illustrated elements that represent the chosen place. So far I've finished London and Barcelona.
Over the summer I intend to collate them all into a small book. They'll also be available to purchase online... watch this space!
Central America
I've just finished working on a print in response to my recent trip to Central America. It's 4 colours and predominately typography based, featuring places visited and activities undertaken. It was great fun to create- especially as each place explored fed a stream of little stories in my head. I'm also really pleased with the colour scheme on this one- they compliment each other well.

Apologies on behalf of my poor neglected blog! I've gotten in the habit of updating more frequently on my Facebook page.
However, this will be rectified! A string of updates to follow...
Here's my completed 2 colour screen printed map of The Hague, Netherlands.

Pattern Pattern Pattern
This was a sample of a digital pattern I designed to use on some privately commissioned cards. It's not something I've really worked with much before, but I really enjoyed putting it all together. I definitely want to keep experimenting and working with pattern- both digital and screen printed. Keep your eyes peeled for more of this in the future!

SNAM 2014 Calendar
These are a few images from the 2014 calendar I illustrated for Italian energy company SNAM. Each illustration explored a particular theme or specific element of the business and the production of natural gas for consumer use. Themes included: sustainability and the protection of the environment, SNAM as a European network and integration. I produced a total of 13 full colour screen printed images for a tight 8 week deadline.
You can view more of the calendar at my website: www.stephmarshall.co.uk, or see the full downloadable version at: http://www.snam.it/en/Media/Calendar/Artistic-calendar/.
